What is the “Metaverse”?

Author Neal Stephenson is credited with coining the term “metaverse” in his 1992 science fiction novel “Snow Crash,” in which he envisioned lifelike avatars who met in realistic 3D buildings and other virtual reality environments.

Since then, various developments have made mileposts on the way toward a real metaverse, an online, virtual world that incorporates augmented reality, virtual reality, 3D holographic avatars, video, and other means of communication.

So it’s a combination of multiple elements of technology, including virtual reality, augmented reality, and video where users “live” within a digital universe. Supporters of the metaverse envision its users working, playing and staying connected with friends through everything from concerts and conferences to virtual trips around to the world, all from the comforts of their own home.

As the metaverse expands, it will offer a hyper-real alternative world for you to coexist in.

Inklings of the metaverse already exist in many online game universes most notably in Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox, where you can customise; avatars worlds & attend community-driven events. And the companies behind those games have ambitions to be part of the evolution of the metaverse.

Why it’s Important to businesses

Imagine a world then, that puts you in control, lets you design the world around you, the digital spaces in which you co-exist, to connect with people across the world instantly, a world of endless possibility, where you choose how you look, where you go and what you do.

And as with every attractive prospect businesses will look to monetise experiences within this digital world, now it sounds crazy right? Spending money on digital things that don’t exist?

But ask yourself how much have kids spent on Roblox and Fortnite? How much do you spend on subscription services like Netflix, Spotify, Phone Apps? or even since the pandemic Virtual concerts?

The groundwork is there and when the digital experience is arguably better, and more easily accessible than the real one.. Say you could have a 1 to 1 VIP experience backstage with your favorite artist, for many such a thing isn’t possible but an “up close” digital experience may well be a lot more accessible.

Really, when you think of all the possibilities…
Paying for digital content, it’s not that absurd a future.

How will businesses operate in the metaverse?

So for many businesses, they’ll be looking to create digital experiences now but this future is still estimated to be 10 years off, these sorts of huge changes, like we’ve seen since the advent of the internet come steadily over time.

Also, it’s not to say people still won’t need physical services.

People will still need to go places, take deliveries of physical products,  you might even see people own fewer cars and need more taxi services as it might make more sense to take occasional trips when you don’t need to daily commute to the office to work.

The metaverse will still also have a strong grounding in the real world through augmented reality or AR.

ar-cloud-meetings

Similar to games like Pokemon Go, apps that show digital things on your phone screen
with the backdrop of the real world with the use of your phone camera, like say a digital tape measure.

This AR tech is already being developed into glasses, maybe even contact lenses in the future, and will allow people to experience the metaverse in the real world, to search for a product, or even book a taxi just by seeing a physical or even digital billboard, like a hologram / QR code projected and viewable “clickable” or voice activated by a virtual assistant, all through your AR glasses.

What does this mean for me today?

There’s is ALOT of potential here and although it’s a way off now, it’s worth thinking about, and if you aren’t already working with modern-day digital marketing techniques this is very quickly going to sound like nonsense to you and you’re going to end up left behind.
